When seventeen-year-old farm girl Claire Moutiers discovers she is pregnant, she quits her supermarket job and takes on an embroidery apprenticeship with the mysterious and worldly Mrs. Melikian, an Armenian who has recently lost her son in an accident. The two women develop an unspoken understanding and Claire can depend on her to keep her secret.

Day by day the friendship between the two women strengthens, and Mrs. Melikian transfers her grief toward parental affection for Claire. With Mrs. Melikian's help, Claire becomes a more skilled embroiderer and prepares for the arrival of her baby. This synopsis barely hints at the rich tapestry woven by director Eléonore Faucher in her first feature.

Combining color, texture, light, exchanged glances, Philip Glass-like music, and the uncomfortable silences that fall between master and apprentice, Faucher brings a poetic and lyrical dimension to her theme of life lost and life borne. The film was the winner of the Critics Prize in Cannes.
